Benefits of Fruitarianism
Why would anyone want to become a fruitarian??
The sacrifice surely outweighs the rewards. But this article is not about the sacrifices of living a fruitarian lifestyle.
It is about the many benefits of fruitarianism, such as health, ease, morality and enjoyment. Below are some of the rewards experienced by myself and others. Comment below with additional benefits.
Health Benefits of Fruitarianism
Many people come to the world of fruit for health reasons. They find that despite all the warnings about how fruit and sugars are detrimental, they are out of options, and none of the allopathic treatments are truly helping their situation. There are also those that embrace fruitarianism as a preventative measure, so that health issues don’t sneak up on them.
How does an all-fruit diet promote health? First and foremost, fruit, berries and melons help to alkalize the body. Many foods that people eat are creating an acidic environment in the body. Such an environment allows pathogens to thrive, inflammation to rise, and toxins to accumulate. An alkaline body lays the path for health success. Learn which foods are acidic and which are alkalizing here. Fruit are also very hydrating. A hydrated cell is a happy cell, leading to limber muscles, flexible joints, a clear mind, quick digestion, etc.
We crave sugar for a reason. Fructose and glucose are our natural fuel. So when we give the body what it wants, we are full of energy. Most fruitarians have boundless energy and don’t require much sleep.
On the other hand, we have many chemicals in our foods that the body absolutely does not want. Thankfully fruit requires no processing and sidesteps a lot of those chemicals – choosing organic helps too. Recreational drugs and alcohol are other substances that cause damage in the body. Receiving that natural high from sweet living fruit makes it easier to let go of those addictions.
Many diabetics believe that sugar is the culprit, when in reality it is fat and its clogging tendencies that block vital sugars from leaving our bloodstream and feeding our cells. Most fruit are low in fat, making weight control and curing diabetes natural results. Understand how to reverse diabetes using diet, as outlined by Dr. Neal Barnard and the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine. The body will readily heal itself when it is not spending all of its energy digesting heavy and complex starches, fats and proteins. Dense foods slow the digestion process and allow for putrefaction in the gut. Fruits digest fast, especially as they come with their own living enzymes to break them down, giving the body all that it needs to maintain optimal vitality. Fruitarian Benefits of Ease
I’ll say it. There is no easier diet out there than fruitarianism. Let’s start with meal prep. Fruit meals can include juicing, making smoothies, chopping and even spiralizing, but they can also just involve biting, chewing and swallowing. Compared to cooked meals or even salads, meal-prep and cleanup of fruit is a joke. One is in and out of the kitchen faster than they can say “yum”.
Then there is availability. Most every country and every grocery store has fruit. Then there are brimming fruit stands in the warmer months, not to mention when you happen upon a fruit tree whilst walking about. Thanks to globalization (words I don’t often mutter), the winter is no longer a barrier to our natural diet.
This leads into the topic of travel. It isn’t too difficult to travel as a fruitarian. In addition to fruit availability, fruit can pack quite well. Throw some apples and oranges in your bag and you’ve got yourself a meal. Dried fruit can also be handy in a pinch. Many stores now carry decadent dried dates, figs, apricots, bananas, mulberries, cranberries, and the list goes on. You can also get yourself a simple dehydrator and make awesome apple chips whenever you fancy.
Monomeals deserves a paragraph of its own. Not only is the simplicity and ease of eating just one type of fruit for a meal shocking to most people, but it is extremely healthy, satisfying and delicious. The body can more easily understand what is being consumed and can work specifically on digesting and integrating said fruit, instead of having to produce a slew of counteracting enzymes and pH environments. Monomeals actually open up the taste buds to detecting the magic of the many subtle flavours present in even a single piece of fruit. Grab one or two punnets of strawberries at the market and you’re good-to-go.
After being on the fruitarian diet for a while, many fruitarians report not having to consume as much food overall. It is thought that the body becomes very clean and much more efficient at using what it is given. While fruitarians often embrace a mindset of abundance – abundance of fabulous fruit and life force – the body may reveal over time the wisdom around “less is more”. I included this benefit under ease, as the less time and money spent concerning oneself with food, the easier and freer life becomes. Free time and ease are great benefits of fruitarianism.
Morality Benefits of Fruitarianism
One can look at vegetarians and vegans and say that they are putting their money where their mouth is – eating ethically that is. Animal harm is greatly reduced by those that eat this way. Not to mention, the land used to raise animals, the resources used to feed them, and the pollution produced from the whole process all lessen – freeing up more land, food and clean natural areas.
Fruitarians take this one step further. Not only do they not create harm to animals, but in essence they do not harm or kill anything with the way they eat – all fruit is a gift from the plant or tree and does not damage or kill the plant itself. The plant or tree offers its fruits as a means of dispersing its seeds into the world. A symbiotic relationship if you will.
Of course there are aspects of fruit production that are less than desirable, such as monoculture, pesticides, herbicides, GMOs and fuel used for transportation. But these can be mitigated with better consumer choices, like buying local organic produce. There are even farms that grow a variety of trees together to create a more naturally dynamic environment for animals and the ecosystem.
Nevertheless, more fruit equals more trees. Instead of fields of rotating crops, we can have beautiful orchards. Orchards that also serve as a place for the public to pick their own fruit as a fun outing! Orchards that are filled with flowers (the stage before the fruit develops) and the happy pollinators flying around to embrace them. The benefits of fruitarianism allow one to live their life in alignment with their morals.
Enjoyment Benefits of Fruitarianism
We cannot forget about joy! Fruit brings us so much joy – colourful, sweet, juicy bundles of flavour! What’s not to love? Each piece of fruit is full of life and fills us up with that life force. This not only chases away disease and decay in our bodies, but gives us so much energy to enjoy the day.
A clear, detoxified body gives us clarity of thought and a more direct connection to spirit. It allows our emotions to flow more freely, unencumbered by stagnant blood, lymph and energy systems. When the body, mind and spirit are flowing freely, our potential can be realized.
As we are developing these internal connections, we are also establishing a connection with mother nature. The living trees and vines providing these tasty morsels have a deep rooted connection to the planet and to the sun. They are fully intertwined with the earth, air and water. When we bring a piece of these plants into our bodies, we become a part of them and that living, breathing network. You can take it one step further and grow your own fruit too! This adds a whole other layer of joy and connection to nature and the process of creating life-giving fruit. Read this article for tips on growing fruit trees in colder climates. Not to mention, you can swap fruit with your neighbours, and spread the love! Joy is one of the main benefits of fruitarianism!
Will you reap the rewards?
Being a fruitarian doesn’t feel like sacrifice to me. It feels liberating and joyful. From the many benefits of fruitarianism listed above, you can better determine for yourself if the rewards outweigh the limitations. With a lifestyle full of health, ease, morals and joy, it’s difficult to see why anyone wouldn’t want to become a fruitarian.
