This list is not meant as an absolute to avoid, but more of a thought to reflect on how these fruit make you feel. Sometimes a bad reaction to a fruit comes out more as an emotion (anger, lethargy, irritability, etc.) than as physical pain. Our emotions are often the first indicator. Listen to your heart and to your body. When you are feeling really in-tune with yourself, you may even be able to detect if your body wants a certain fruit just by holding it. With that said, many fruitarians love the fruit listed below.
The Avoid List
- Pineapple: There are microscopic spikes in this fruit, which may irritate one’s system, along with being quite acidic.
- Figs: Unless they are tree-ripened, eating the skin can dissolve one’s mouth and tongue skin with its enzymes.
- Avocado, Coconut, Durian: If you are detoxing, the high fat in these fruit may be too much. Fats will slow detox, cause some acidity and slow down the bowels. Many fruitarians do not eat these fruit. Not to mention, durian fruit contain sulfur, which may make symptoms worse.
- Watermelon: This fruit is a vasodilator, meaning it opens up the veins. If you have problems with blood pooling in extremities, this fruit may not be for you.
- Peppers, Eggplant, Tomatoes, Goji Berries: Nightshades can aggravate one’s system.
- Bananas: This dense fruit can sometimes feed candida, especially if you eat a lot of them.
- Unripe Fruit: Unripe fruit can be harder, starchier, more acidic, less nutrient dense, etc. Some fruit ripen alright once picked, others do not. Look up what a ripe fruit looks/smells/feels like before digging in. One very notable fruit NOT to eat unripened is a Hachiya Persimmon. If eaten before it is dark orange and very soft, it will make your mouth feel as if sticky cotton is sucking all moisture from your mouth. Very unpleasant. It can be hard to swallow and can create a bezoar in the digestive system. Not good. A ripening tip is to place them leaf-side down in a pot with an apple or two, which release ethylene gas to encourage ripening. Also note that it is much better to eat bananas once their skin has started getting brown spots. If you want to ripen your bananas faster, remove the plastic covering from the stem.
