Helpful Healthy Habits
In no particular order…
BATHS Take baths often. Warm water hydrates skin and helps the lymphatic system detoxify out of the skin. Put some herbs in the water for a better effect. You can soak herbal tea overnight and put that water in your bath, or you can get a herbal tincture and put a few dropper-fulls in. Lemon Balm and Olive Leaf are two of my favourites. Do not put Epsom salts in your bath. These have sulfur in it and can exacerbate health issues. You can try magnesium flakes (magnesium chloride) instead, and add in some baking soda. Use scrubber gloves often to clear away the old skin and open up detox channels. They say that the skin is the third kidney. Baths are beneficial over showers in that in a bath the lymphatic fluid in your feet and lower legs can migrate back up to be released.
BODY MASSAGES Go for body massages as often as you can to help move lymph, release blockages, feel amazing and waken up the body.
COLONICS The large intestine/colon is the last step before food leaves your body. Doing a colonic or colon hydrotherapy helps you to remove old fecal matter, toxins and parasites that are hanging out there. It also provides some hydration. The best option is to go to a place that has an Angel of Water machine. Colonics are far superior to enemas. If you have any health issue, do regular colonics. Eat only fruit and herbs for at least 2 days prior to your session. Having your session in the afternoon is also better, as your digestive system has started moving. Read here for indications and contraindications.
ROWING MACHINE Rowing machines are a great way to get in your exercise, especially if you have any lymphatic or blood pooling issues in your lower extremities or POTS. It has a low impact on the joints, while providing great cardio. Here are some rowing tips: push with the legs first then follow through with the arm pull, start on an easy level, master your technique early on, keep your back straight, don’t pivot your back too much, put an earplug in the nostril of your more easy-breathing side to help with sinus congestion, rotate between hands over and hands under handlebars, do it barefoot, prop heals up on foot support rims or point feet on occasion to work leg muscles, track your progress, take breaks in your workout to stand and kick your legs, place a cut up yoga mat as a seat cushion and under the machines feet to prevent sliding, get a small fan to keep you cool, turn feet out sometimes, keep a paper and pen next to you as ideas tend to flow during rowing, watch Dark Horse Rowing YouTube videos for more rowing information. A basic cord-resistance model may do the trick, especially if you are not a big person.
LAVENDER FEET Rubbing some lavender essential oil on your feet at night can be rejuvenating. Some people find benefits in spraying a magnesium solution on their feet at night too.
IODINE NAILS If you have any nail infection, put some liquid iodine (povidone) on the nail after a bath or shower. It will colour the nail orange until it is washed off.
SLEEP Go to sleep early. The endocrine system resets itself while you sleep between the hours of 9 pm and midnight. If you have trouble sleeping, try listening to an audiobook you’ve heard before (setting the shut off time for an hour), or listen to a show you’ve seen before (some streaming platforms will stop playing after a few episodes – or you can disable autoplay). You can also get a white noise machine that has different nature sounds. A cold room with fresh air is also great for sleep. Sleeping without a shirt is good for the energetic flow throughout your body. Also do not look at a screen for an hour or 2 before bed. If you tend to wake up in the middle of the night for a while, try forcing yourself to wake up early – shortening your sleeping window. You can have some hot water with a squeeze of lemon to help relax the body. Magnesium spray on the feet can also help you relax. Sleep time is very important, as your body does a lot of its detoxing then.
GROUNDING/EARTHING Get those wonderful negative electrons from the planet by walking on the earth/grass/sand barefoot or on a concrete basement floor. You can also just touch the ground with your hands. Some purported benefits are increased blood flow, reduced inflammation, better immune function, reduced pain, improved sleep and greater energy. Try it for 10 minutes, but the longer the better.
SINGING Our cells and our DNA resonates at certain frequencies. Singing tunes our body into states of harmony. If you don’t feel comfortable singing, start with humming different notes.
SUNSHINE Not only do we produce vitamin D with sun exposure, but the sun’s rays are also antimicrobial. Sunshine raises our vibration and provides us with energy. Aim for around 30 minutes or more a day. Do your best to avoid sunburns.
LIMIT SCREEN TIME & EMFs Staring at screens is very draining on our energy reserve. It makes our bodies stagnant and eyes strained. Not to mention, holding phones disrupts our cellular energy with EMFs (electromagnetic frequencies) – so do your best not to put phones to your head. Bluetooth headphones are a big no-no, and a wired computer mouse is preferable. Also avoid WiFi or Bluetooth watches. Limit your time watching TV, scrolling your phone and working on the computer. Try audiobooks for entertainment, instead. Also, take regular movement breaks when working on the computer or watching TV. To minimize blue light exposure (light frequencies damaging to the eye), wear blue light blocking glasses, turn down screen brightness, turn up the light in the room, and turn up the night light (warm light) setting on the device.
EXERCISE Do your best to exercise daily. Walking is great. Strength training is fantastic. And stretching is essential.
LYMPHATIC MASSAGES Moving your lymphatic fluid is paramount for healing. Your lymphatic fluid takes cellular waste away from your tissues and out through your urine. Unlike blood, however, lymph does not have a pump (like the heart). It moves by gravity, touch and body movement. Doing a lymphatic massage on yourself is a great way to move and drain lymph. This video provides an easy tutorial on how to do a self lymphatic massage.
SLEEP POSITION If you sleep in a bit of a hammock position, it can be very helpful. Use a bed wedge pillow to prop your feet and legs up. This will help to drain the lymph from your lower extremities while you sleep. It also reduces the work of your heart to pump the blood back up from your feet while you sleep. A 7.5 inch high wedge should do the trick. For your upper body, you can use furniture risers to prop up the legs of your bed on the head side. This helps move lymph down, helps digestion move down (good for SIBO and acid reflux), and helps prevent positional vertigo spells while you sleep. A 3 inch riser should do the trick. You can sleep on your back or side with the wedge and risers.
NIGHTLY FASTING It is very important to have a proper fast of not eating overnight. This is when your body is detoxing and resetting. Some people practice Intermittent Fasting at 16 hours of fasting overnight and an 8 hour window of eating during the day. While those hours aren’t necessary, you may find that a fruitarian diet has your body working so efficiently that you don’t need to eat much. I would recommend trying to stop eating at 6 pm and in the morning have hot water with a squeeze of lemon first. This will quell your hunger and set your day off to a good start. Then eat when you are sufficiently hungry. You can extend that fasted window with herbal tea too. If you start eating at 10 am, then that would be a 16 hour fast. Fasting really boosts your body’s healing and efficiency.
MUSIC Listening to music is very healing for the mind, body and spirit. Try incorporating music throughout your day. Find a playlist for any occasion. For example, reggae music while you make food, classical music while you take a bath, Latin music while you work out, or techno music while you work. Spotify is great for trying on different playlists.
SOUND HEALING Along the lines of music, sound healing will elevate your spirit and your cells. Find a sound healing session near you to indulge in the etheric vibrations.
POSITIVE MINDSET It is easy to get stuck in a state of fear when dealing with chronic illness. Some fearful thoughts might be: “I’m going to be disabled forever” “Life is going to suck” “My body is broken”. Faith on the other hand, sounds like: “My body is working to heal every day” “My life will be fulfilling” “Nature knows best”. One cannot reside in a state of fear and faith simultaneously. Therefore, we all must pick a side in every moment. If you choose fear, life will give you things to be afraid of. If you choose faith, solutions will present themselves to you. If you need some inspiration for holding onto faith, read some books by Esther Hicks or search for her on YouTube. While it is good to listen to your body and to feel painful emotions as they arise, it is important not to dwell there. Focus on your successes. For example, “I ate a lot of fruit today” or “even though my back hurts, I don’t have a headache now”. Healing isn’t a straight line. How you feel will go up and down. Just hold onto the knowledge that your body is healing more and more everyday. Eventually you will feel great. And for now take in all the little moments that you feel good.
CRYSTALS Crystals vibrate at special frequencies and hold particular energies. Many crystals are great for healing. Wearing them on your body will help assimilate their energies with yours.
REIKI This is the practice of physically working on healing the energy field of people’s bodies. It is usually done by moving someone’s energy with the healer’s hands. Our energy fields interact with our physical form, so it is beneficial to work on the energy aspect regularly, to release blocked energy and emotions.
THERAPY & JOURNALING Working through your emotions is part of the healing process. When one becomes a fruitarian, often old traumas resurface as your body cleanses them out. A fruitarian does not have junk food to distract themselves and shove the emotion back down. Journaling and therapy are great ways to get help processing these heavy emotions. To journal you can just write down what’s on your mind, or you find journal prompts that work for you. If you don’t have much money for therapy, Open Path provides discounted rates for Canada and the United States. Also, if you are dealing with a chronic health issue or pain, it is nice to talk to someone that is trained to know how to listen and hold space. It can be frustrating for people that are chronically ill because when they mention their struggles to others, they are often confronted with people trying to solve their condition, or telling them that they look fine, or suggesting that they are not doing enough or the right things, etc.
ESSENTIAL OILS Breathing in essential oils is a great way to stimulate healing and peace of mind. One method of enjoying them is with an oil burner where you add water and a few drops of an oil you like, then light a tealight underneath. Make sure that your tealight is 100% beeswax, as paraffin and even soy wax are toxic to breathe in.
SPIRIT GUIDES Your spirit guides are a team of beings on the other side that are there to support you throughout your life. You have angels, ancestors and ascended masters all rooting for you and your success. They are wise and loving. To receive their help and wisdom, you must ask them for it. Take a moment here and there and say out loud to them what you need or want help with. They will communicate to you by creating synchronicities in your life or giving you certain feeling at specific moments. So pay attention to what comes into your experience.
SWIM Taking a dip in a saltwater pool or the ocean is great exercise, while being hydrating and rejuvenating.
NATURE Get out in nature, because it’s awesome.
MEDITATE Even a 2 minute meditation can help you connect in with your body. Abraham Hicks tip: listen to the sound of a fan.
AVOID TOXINS Avoid exposure to toxins when you can. Make natural choices when it comes to skincare, cleaning products, laundry soaps, air fresheners and perfume. Only burn candles that are 100% beeswax. Don’t use tin foil or disposable plastic for food. Eat organic when possible.
BAREFOOT SHOES & TOE SPACERS When your toes are spread out the way they are meant to, they take the impact of your daily movement. When toes are cramped into shoes and eventually disfigure as such, misalignment and pain can follow throughout your whole body. Learn more about how to fix this with this video.
KEEP THE KIDNEYS WARM We are warm blooded creatures. Our kidneys filter our blood to keep our blood and lymph clean. When our kidneys are cold (mid to lower back), then there is not enough blood flow in our kidneys to have them working optimally. So keep your kidneys warm and save your crop tops for the hot days.
